Making a Difference

Foster City, CA – The future is bright for our students at the San Mateo-Foster City School District. Beginning of the 2022-2023 academic school year, the is LEGO Education’s STEM curriculum and Paxton Patterson College & Career ready labs for SMFCSD students.

“With the implementation of LEGO in our lower grades, we are excited to bring STEM into everyday learning for our students,” states Superintendent Diego Ochoa. “For our middle school students, Paxton Patterson is an important curriculum to expose our students to. Especially in Silicon Valley where kids may automatically associate ‘software developer’ with STEM but may not see that robotics, mechanics, nursing, science research, trades, and many other roles are also STEM.”

The San Mateo-Foster City School District extends deep appreciation and gratitude to the wonderful San Mateo-Foster City Education Foundation for its dedicated and strong community partnership with the Gilead Foundation, awarding the Ed Foundation with a $500,000 grant.

“We are proud to support the Education Foundation and SMFCSD,” said Keeley Wettan, Senior Vice President, Legal, Gilead Sciences, and Board Chair, Gilead Foundation. “Investing in our local community is a priority for the Gilead Foundation, especially to advance STEM education and equity in our schools. Today’s students are tomorrow’s innovators - we look forward to some of them making key scientific discoveries in the future, perhaps even at Gilead one day.”

The SMFC Education Foundation's immense dedication to our students will never go unrecognized. The Ed Foundation is targeting just over $1M in funds for programs during the 2021-2022 school year, providing the district with needed funds to purchase products for students relating to science, technology, engineering, and math.

"Our success this year has been the result of an incredible partnership with Superintendent Ochoa, district staff, and the wonderful community we live in," said Annie Tsai, SMFC Ed Foundation Board President. "We look forward to deepening the strength of these relationships over the coming years so we can continue to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of all of the children this school district is charged with supporting."

The Board of Trustees adopted both new curriculums during the March 24, 2022, regular board meeting with five-vote support. Updates regarding these newly adopted curriculums will be shared with our community via our monthly district newsletters.
