Interdistrict Transfer Requests

INTERDISTRICT TRANSFER REQUESTS TO LEAVE SMFCSD

To request a transfer out of the San Mateo-Foster City School District, please submit an Interdistrict Transfer request to Student Services.  Email the completed form to Samantha Roggio - sroggio@smfcsd.net.  You may also send by mail or drop off the form to the District Office. Once approved, Student Services will forward the paperwork to the requested school district.  The requested district will notify you of their decision to either accept or decline the request. Please call 650-312-7298 if you have additional questions.

SMFCSD ORIGIN FAMILIES THAT MOVE OUTSIDE THE BOUNDARIES OF THE SMFCSD

If your address of residence originated in the SMFCSD and your family has moved outside of District boundaries, and you wish for your currently enrolled child to continue in the SMFCSD, you may request an interdistrict transfer from the new district of residence within 30 days.

Contact your child's current school office staff to notify them of your change in address.  You will need to provide a new proof of residence to the school office staff.

Interdistrict transfers must be renewed by May 1 of every following school year that the family wishes for the child to continue in the SMFCSD.

INTERDISTRICT TRANSFER REQUESTS TO ENTER SMFCSD

Families that reside outside the boundaries and wish for their child to attend school in the SMFCSD must first request and receive an approved interdistrict transfer (out) from the district of residence.  Interdistrict transfer requests are only considered after all SMFCSD students have been placed, and only if there is space available.  The District will begin processing all interdistrict transfer requests for the 2024-2025 school year on May 1, 2024.  Please call 650-312-7345 for more information.

Note that the SMFCSD will only process interdistrict paperwork provided to it by the district of residence. Paperwork from the district of residence, provided to the SMFCSD by the parent/guardian, will not be processed.

The District may approve or deny a request dependent upon impacts on enrollment, finances, or educational program.

The SMFCSD will notify parent/guardian of its final decision within the following timeframes:

  • For an interdistrict transfer request received by SMFCSD more than 15 days before the commencement of instruction in the school year for which the transfer is sought, SMFCSD will notify the parent/guardian of its final decision as soon as possible, but no later than 14 calendar days after the beginning of instruction in the school year for which the interdistrict transfer is sought.
  • For an interdistrict transfer request received by SMFCSD 15 or fewer days before the beginning of instruction in the school year for which the transfer is sought, SMFCSD will notify the parent/guardian of its final decision within 30 calendar days from the date the request was received.

Failure of the parent/guardian to meet any timelines established by this website, Board Policy, and/or Administrative Regulation, is deemed to be an abandonment of the request.

Families that wish to appeal an interdistrict transfer denial may submit a written request to the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services within 10 working days of receipt of denial notification.

REVOKING AN INTERDISTRICT TRANSFER

The district, for good reason, may revoke an interdistrict transfer at any time. Reasons may include, but not be limited to, lack of space, irregular student attendance, unsatisfactory academic progress, failure to adhere to the district/school discipline policy, discovery that the application had been falsified, or special education needs/costs exceeding income pursuant to interdistrict attendance agreements.
