K-2 Reading Screener

At the San Mateo-Foster City School District, we are committed to ensuring every student becomes a confident, joyful reader. As part of this commitment—and in alignment with California Education Code 53008—all school districts are now required to screen students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade for early signs of reading difficulties.

SMFCSD is well prepared for this work. Over the past four years, our district has strengthened early literacy instruction through a Structured Literacy approach grounded in the Science of Reading, including research-based programs such as PAF (Preventing Academic Failure) and Aprendo Leyendo at Fiesta Gardens, both rooted in the Orton-Gillingham approach. These efforts are already making a difference in how students build foundational reading skills.

Beginning May 2026, our district will use mCLASS DIBELS 8th Edition as our K–2 reading difficulties screener (students at Fiesta Gardens will participate in mCLASS Lectura in Spanish). This screening helps teachers better understand each student’s reading progress and ensures we continue providing the right support as students move into the next grade level.
