Implementing Our Vision: Newcomer Wellness & Belonging

In the San Mateo-Foster City School District, our Strategic Plan outlines a clear vision: that every student feels safe, supported, and seen. For our newcomer students—those newly arrived to the United States—this begins with a warm welcome and a network of care from the very first day.

At the center of this work is our Newcomer Wellness Specialist, whose role is grounded in compassion, connection, and belonging. From school tours and peer ambassadors to in-language support and wellness check-ins, she helps guide students and families through the transition into a new school system with empathy and structure. Her presence ensures no student navigates this journey alone.

This work reflects our commitment to implementing Newcomer Intake and Support Services, a core component of the 2022–2027 Strategic Plan. Beyond academic needs, we recognize that newcomer students often require access to social, emotional, and mental health resources to thrive. The supports we provide—from designated English Language Development to trauma-informed classroom practices—are not one-time interventions, but ongoing, relationship-centered efforts.

Every school in our district plays a role in creating this ecosystem of care. Whether it’s a teacher who validates a student’s story, a counselor who checks in regularly, or a peer who offers to sit beside them at lunch—each act of support contributes to a larger culture of inclusion.

Together, through intentional strategy and human connection, we are turning vision into action. Our schools are places where newcomer students are not just welcomed, but truly embraced—for who they are, where they come from, and everything they bring to our community.
