Instructional Programs

SMFCSD provides various language instructional programs for Multilingual learners across our schools. All our instructional programs are expected to provide a full, comprehensive curriculum with scaffolds and support for students at different English language proficiency levels in order to allow multilingual learners to meaningfully participate in their learning. The following table describes the different programs offered in our district.

Integrated & Designated ELD

Integrated ELD is provided throughout the school day and across all subjects by all teachers of multilingual learners. The CA ELD Standards are used in tandem with the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy and other content standards (math, science, social science, physical education) to ensure students strengthen their abilities to use English as they simultaneously learn content through English.

Designated ELD is provided by skilled teachers during a protected time during the regular school day. Teachers use the CA ELD Standards as the focus to develop the critical language ELs need for content learning in English. Students should receive 30 minutes per day of designated ELD time during the school day. Both Designated and Integrated ELD are required by State and Federal Education Code.
