Workforce Housing

The San Mateo-Foster City School District continues to move forward thoughtfully and transparently in exploring workforce housing solutions for our educators and staff.

Over the past year, the District convened a 12-member Workforce Housing Leadership Subcommittee representing teachers, classified staff, administrators, city representatives, trustees, and community partners. In partnership with J Turner Research, we conducted a comprehensive staff housing survey with more than 600 respondents. The data confirmed that housing affordability remains one of the most significant challenges impacting recruitment and retention.

Conceptual feasibility studies were completed for two district-owned properties—the Knolls Campus and the Chess Drive site—to better understand development potential, constraints, and long-term viability. After reviewing survey results, site analyses, and alignment with the updated 2026 Facilities Master Plan, the Workforce Housing Leadership Subcommittee recommended that the District move forward with continued exploration of workforce housing at the Knolls Campus only.

The District has shared this update with community stakeholders, including the San Mateo United Homeowners Association, to ensure transparency and open communication. All related materials and presentations remain available on this page.

Workforce housing remains part of the District’s broader long-term facilities planning and sustainability efforts, as we continue to evaluate responsible pathways to support the educators and staff who serve our students every day.
