Equipment Closet - Borel

Project Status: Available

Project Overview

With the last school-wide remodeling taking place in 2000, certain aspects of Borel's campus require updates to meet the school's evolving needs. One area of concern is the equipment shed, which is accessed daily during recess by student volunteers. These volunteers set up the table and chairs (as shown in Exhibit A) in front of the closet, allowing other students to borrow them using a sign-up sheet. Additionally, the school custodian uses the equipment shed daily to store and access cleaning supplies and materials.

As shown in Exhibit B, the metal grille sliding door does not fully close due to the obstruction caused by the lock and chain. This sliding door needs to be replaced with one that allows for a full, secure closure, complete with a functioning lock.

Furthermore, the equipment closet requires a new storage cabinet unit to replace the one shown in Exhibit A. This cabinet will be used to organize and store the custodian's supplies and equipment. The new unit must be designed to accommodate the other pieces of furniture in the equipment shed, ensuring there is sufficient space for everything. The shelves must be sturdy enough to support heavy weights, as they will be used to hold various janitorial supplies.

Dimensions

  • The sizing of the shelving unit will depend on whether the rest of the appliances can fit within the closet. Accurate measurements and consideration of the existing appliances are essential to ensure that the new shelving system can accommodate all items efficiently and make the best use of the available space.

Materials

  • It is recommended the shelving unit be constructed from wood, plastic, or metal
  • The shelving must be thick enough to withstand heavy weight being placed upon them
  • The sliding door must be rugged enough to withstand thorough use.

Safety Concerns

  • Utilization of saws and other sharp instruments
  • Utilization of power tools, including power drills
  • Exposure to fumes from oil-based paints, wood varnishes, and wood sealers

Desired Construction Time

Construction will need to be completed when students are off-campus, times such as after school hours, weekends, or school breaks are preferable for this activity.

Financial Aid

Depends if there are sufficient school funds for the year
