SMFCSD By-Trustee Area Map
SMFCSD BY-TRUSTEE AREA MAP - ADOPTED FEBRUARY 4, 2022
The San Mateo-Foster City School District continues its work to elevate all constituent voices in our community. In partnership with the district's demographer and legal counsel, the Board of Trustees and Superintendent Ochoa led the process to select a new election by-trustee area map, map scenario 1A. This map alongside Resolution No. 21/21-22 was adopted by the board on February 24, 2022.
This change came after the August 26, 2021 meeting of the Board of Trustees, where the district adopted Map 209 to establish by-Trustee Area Elections. (Map 209 Demographics). Every 10 years school district should review new census data to determine to which extent trustee areas fall under a variance of less than 10%. The districts originally adopted map after the decennial review of 2020 arrived at a 9.75 total population variance. This is a requirement to review trustee areas for each decennial census within the By-Trustee-Area election system [Education Code 5019.5].
Three of the four current board members of the San Mateo-Foster City School District School Board are elected “at-large” meaning that candidates are required to reside within given areas of the cities of San Mateo and Foster City and the voters of the cities of San Mateo and Foster City elect the candidates to the Board.
A “by-trustee area” election, wherein one candidate residing in each trustee area is elected by only the registered voters in that particular trustee area, ensures compliance with the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA).
