Read the most recent Superintendent Update from Dr. Joan Rosas

Friday, FEBRUARY 19, 2021

Hello Everyone,
Today’s newsletter will provide you with updated information about reopening, the calendar for 2021-22, a new Equity Statement and the Superintendent Search.

At the Board Meeting last night, Trustees approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Return to Work with the California School Employees Association (CSEA) which was ratified by CSEA in January.

Additionally, on Wednesday, February 17, the San Mateo Elementary Teachers’ Association (SMETA) and the District reached a tentative Hybrid MOU for elementary grades. The MOU is out for review and ratification by union members and the Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote on this MOU at their Special Board Meeting, Friday, February 26 at 3:30 pm.

We thank our union leadership and the negotiation teams for their many hours of collaboration that led to these agreements.

In reviewing the reopening schedule, Trustees determined that the March 5 end of trimester should be considered in the reopening process and directed staff to reopen for in-person learning starting on Monday, March 8. The updated plan is as follows:

  • Last day students and teachers will meet in their current classes will be Wednesday, March 3
  • Asynchronous days will be held Thursday, March 4 and Friday, March 5
  • Grades TK-2 and all SDC begin in the Hybrid Model on Monday, March 8
  • Grades 3-5 begin in the Hybrid Model on Monday, March 15

As part of the reopening steps, our COVID-19 Safety Plan was submitted to the State of California, San Mateo County Office of Education and San Mateo County Health and we await their final approval. Our District Reopening Handbook has also been updated to comply with the new guidance for schools released by California Department of Health in January. All of these documents can be found on our COVID-19 Updates webpage. Individual school procedures and other guidance have been prepared and will be shared with families by principals.

Following the Board’s previous direction, Strategic Cohorts for middle school began at  Bayside Academy and Bowditch Middle School on February 10 and at Abbott and Borel on February 17. They opened at North Shoreview Montessori today.

The Board also directed staff to develop a middle school Hybrid Model to begin after spring break 2021. This work continues next week with Family Engagement Meetings being held by each middle school. Families are encouraged to attend your student’s school meeting and, if you have not already, you will receive invitations and login instructions from your principal.
