The San Mateo Foster City School District is committed to providing reading intervention for students who have not yet reached standard in academic areas. Several times throughout the school year, teachers and administrators gather to review reading assessments to ensure that all students are making progress towards end-of-year expectations. When it is noted that, despite high quality classroom instruction, a student is falling behind, the team determines appropriate interventions in order to accelerate a student’s learning.
In addition to their classroom instruction, these students receive additional instruction that is targeted to meet their specific learning needs. The intensity and specificity of the intervention is determined based on student need. In many of our schools, teachers are piloting the Leveled Literacy Intervention program. This research-based program is intended for teachers to deliver in a small group for a short period of time in order to help students catch up to their peers. Reading Recovery™ is also provided at many of our schools. This intervention is taught to our 1st grade students who are significantly below grade level and is delivered by a Reading Specialist, who has had intense training and ongoing professional development in the teaching of reading. Reading Recovery™ is a research-based, internationally recognized, 1:1 intervention, taught for 30 minutes every day.
The goal of our interventions is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to learn how to read at grade level and to access the Common Core State Standards with success and enthusiasm.
